Welcome to MHDR!

Mental Health and Deafness Resources provides intensive mental health and educational services to persons who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or have communication disorders. This includes persons whose issues are complicated by developmental disability or neurological dysfunction. All services are provided using Total Communication (voice and sign language).

Psychiatric Hospital Program

Mental Health and Deafness Resources operates an inpatient unit at a private, free-standing psychiatric hospital, serving children and adolescents who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing or who have communication disorders.

Group Homes

Mental Health and Deafness Resources operates five group homes, including one Community Integrated Living Arrangement (CILA). All locations are licensed by the Illinois DCFS (Dept. of Children and Family Services). Each serves a specific age range of children or adolescents on a 24/7 hourly basis. These homes are located in Chicago’s north suburbs and in the Bloomington-Normal area.

Educational Services

Mental Health and Deafness Resources provides daily educational services for children and adolescents who are deaf or hard of hearing and who have behavioral or emotional concerns. The program is fully approved by the ISBE (Illinois State Board of Education). The classrooms in our group homes also serve students from the surrounding communities as day students.

Diagnostic Services

Mental Health and Deafness Resources provides Diagnostic Services on and off site, given by members of our Diagnostic Team. The team is led and directed by Patricia Scherer, Ph.D, and consists of three licensed psychologists, each of whom have extensive background in testing and services to deaf and hard of hearing students.
